Hi! White guy from Virginia here. A black family I'm close with brought me with them for Black Panther at the fancy theater with the good seats as I am their resident Marvel expert. It was an amazing thing to be a part of! Black Panther was a major cultural event and there was a joy and electricity to the audience, so many of whom were in traditional African dress, jewelry, and patterns.
Fun fact the "Hey Auntie" line from Killmonger, was actually improvised by Michael B. Jordan. He felt it added more to the moment.... *AND HE WAS RIGHT!!* I LOVE they kept it in!

Black Panther is the protector of Wakanda. The king is usually a separate position. T'chaka gave up the mantle of Black Panther when T'challa came of age. T'challa only became king when his fathet died. We saw that he was already Black Panther when we met him in Civil War. Also Ultron chopped off Klaue's hand.
They're not supposed to be separate positions, but the MCU decided to make it that way for drama in Civil War... which was fine until a different person wrote Black Panther and realized that in order to have the kingship be gained through ceremonial combat, that required making up the *very* stupid concept of "they have a different drink to take away the power so that it can be a fair fight." And that stupid concept wouldn't be necessary under the original way it works... where the person who becomes king is then given the herb, and ONLY the king is given it.

Back in the day, the James Bond films were a successful in the small part to always having fantastic new exotic locations. They always wowed us with that like we are world travelers jetting around the planet. Marvel was able to capture some of that in films like this.

Yes I saw this in the movies in IMAX and was blown away. I'm turning 70 in 2 weeks and I'll never forget spending 12 cents on my first Marvel comic back in the early 1960's. Wait... that's wild... you look like The Human Torch?! ... lol, I'm kidding. Obviously I know you meant "a black superhero." Awesome story... and yes, you are SOOOOO very right that they should have adapted the comics faithfully. Most of the changes annoy me to no end. Even the great moments that were original MCU ideas don't sway me enough to prefer it over a faithful adaptation, because the terribly-bad original parts are so much worse, lol. And they absolutely NEED to give some serum to Sam in the very first minutes of Cap 4... because it is impossible to buy all of the stuff he does in the trailers (and the tv series) if he is still just normal human Falcon with a jetwing suit. All of the stuff he does with the shield just completely destroys my "suspension of disbelief" because a human without the serum couldn't possibly do all of that. They HAVE TO make Sam a supersoldier immediately if they are going to have him be Cap now... yeah? What are your thoughts?
@@stevealford230 Completely agree. There were so many adaptations made to seemingly appeal to a wider audience which I get but somewhat disappointing. I'll never forgive the horrible attempts at Fantastic Four which is the "first family" of Marvel. I only hope RD Jr does justice to Dr Doom but I kind of doubt it. But hey, I remember thinking that none of this would ever make it to live action feature movies so we are playing with house money as it were... I will give them points for bringing Namor to life in BP 2 though.
"Why is he going so hard for the new king?" If you were to ask him, he'd say it's because Killmonger won the challenge fair and square, and that makes him the rightful king, so he's just being loyal to Wakanda. What he probably wouldn't admit is that he's also influenced by his personal beef with T'Challa.
His parents were killed by Klau in the explosion when he stole the vibranium. His beef was actually more with T'Chaka for not pursuing Klau earlier. That's why he told T'Challa, I thought it would be different with you as king but it's just more of the same.
So many people miss the concept that Kilmonger represents the African American (really the disenfranchised/colonized in the African Diaspora) and Wakanda represents the Continent had it not been ravaged of it's resources, including its people. When T'Challa's statement "You have become them" really hit that militarized mindset. I never felt that Kilmonger was evil, but he was DEFINITELY a problem.
I started picturing Martin Lawrence in Whittaker's role and just busted out laughing because I feel like he's never played a serious person in his life...has he? Without looking it up i literally can't think of a single serious movie he's done, just comedies 🤔
John and Atandwa Kani (irl father and son) are prominent South African actors. I had the privilege of seeing John Kani and Winston Ntshona in the play The Island (which they put together with playwright Athol Fugard in the 1970s). It’s about political prisoners on South Africa’s (then) maximum security prison Robben Island who put on a version of the Greek tragedy Antigone. Unknown to all three of them, prisoners had done Antigone on the Island in real life. I saw a revival of the play with Kani and Ntshona in Cape Town, South Africa in the 1980s. Just over twenty years later in Johannesburg I saw Atandwa Kani reprise his dad’s role in Johannesburg. And by the way, the language of Wakanda in the movie is isiXhosa, both Kanis’ home language. They coached the actors in the dialogue. The accent of the villain played by Andy Serkis is Afrikaans…not perfect but not the worst I’ve heard in Hollywood movies. (The best Afrikaans accents are in District 9, because the actors were South Africans).
Killmonger is a top 3 MCU antagonist for me. In the end, he convinced T'challa to change his worldview. He went from isolationism to engagement. Killmonger's ends were justfiable. His means were not.
Honestly, his means were actually justifiable. He challenged for the throne and beat T'challa fair and square. Following the traditions, he was King. While he was tricky in betraying Klaw, he actually took responsibility for his father's mistake in stealing the Vibranium and brought Klaw back. Many people won't agree with his methods because he's the antagonist, but he wasn't wrong.
@@christopherlane5238I agree he’s just a prick. The core of his beef is, “you made me grow up in California!” And that justifies plunging the world into violent war? Killmonger is a whiner.
Kevin Fiege (FY-GEE) with a hard G. Also, Bucky is there because Captain America brings him there to help get rehabilitated. It was in the Civil War end credit scene.
This is a interesting and sad tidbit about the director Ryan Coogler: he was going to a Bank of America branch in Atlanta with a cheque for 10,000 with a note asking for the money to be counted discreetly when he was detained by police after the teller had seen that his account was flagged as "high-risk transaction" and she being pregnant felt worried for her and her child's safety when she told her manager. The police after seeing who he was after clearing everything up let him, his driver, and a passenger go and Bank of America issued an apology and everything was resolved in the end.
😢I wonder why some people comment on black movies, when they dont care about black people....they will always get the main parts of the dialogue wrong, the comedic parts wrong...the main messages wrong....either by accident( huhhhh) or ON PURPOSE.....or the scariest thing....they will run the story straight out.....without giving an absolute fuck about them....people like that will sleep good at night knowing that an innocent black person was killed....and love it
This film was Michael B. Jordan's 2nd time playing a Marvel comics character having played Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch in the 2015 Fantastic Four, with Captain America actor Chris Evans playing Johnny Storm in 05 Fantastic Four & 07 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Babe, you may need to start watching with the subtitles on if you're not already. You're asking a lot of questions that had been answered by the scene you had just watched.
30:32 He's going hard for the new king because his parents were killed at the border by Klau in the explosion when Klau stole the vibranium. He wants revenge and change. He was disappointed that T'Challa did not bring Klau back to Wakanda for justice, yet Kilmonger did. Remember when he told T'Challa, I thought it would be different with you as king yet it's more of the same. He's been seeking revenge since his parents died protecting the border. He's from the Border tribe.
Did you not see the post credit scene of Civil War, where they showed Bucky being put back under deep freeze, while they found a way to deprogram his evil side? And the very last image was of a giant panther statue. They were in Wakanda.
Klaue (Andy Serikis) was introduced in Avengers Age of Ultron. Ultron chopped his arm off, hence the vibranium arm in this movie. Bucky was taken to Wakanda after Civil War so they could try to cure his Hydra hypnosis. Wakanda is on earth, it's in Africa (in the MCU, it's obvs not real). Kevin Feige is the head honcho at Marvel and is directly responsible for the entire MCU. His name is pronounced FY-ghee the G is like "guess, glue, gum" etc.
Fun fact: aside from a handful of extras, Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis are the only white guys in the movie. Them also being in LoTR adaptations makes them the Tolkien White Guys. Also, the gorilla 'chant' M'Baku does when Martin Freeman's character starts to talk was an improv from Winston Duke. What this movie does perfectly, to me, is to show that the villain of the piece isn't a true villain in Hollywood terms. He's not someone who does what he does for nefarious, world-domination type reasons, he does it to help those he sees as his people - the disenfranchised and oppressed, the people being treated as Less Than, the forgotten and mistreated people. He wants to use Wakandan technology to help the rest of the world to stand up against the oppressors. He's The Bad Guy of the movie, but he's genuinely trying to help. It kinda helps make him the villain that he does some pretty fucken messed up shit like wantonly killing people, and burning the magic Black Panther herb etc but we see at the end that he DOES make a difference, and kinda pushes T'Challa into opening up Wakanda to helping those outside her borders. So, he's a bit of an asshole, but not a real Hollywood Villain kinda thing.
Seeing the plane fly into Wakanda for the first time on a huge screen was amazing. This is one of my favorite MCU films and the later wonkiness of the CGI that turns some people off has never bothered me since I grew up on a lot of sci-fi, new and old, where the cg wasn't the best.
This movie was still playing at my theater around the same time that Infinity Wars was playing. One day a customer comes in to buy tickets to Black Panther but it's almost sold out. However, there were still seats for Infinity War. When I tried to sell him on seeing that he asked "what's the Avengers". This seemed odd but I explained the comic books eventually reminding him that Black Panther is in Infinity War. He was suddenly shocked to realize that Black Panther was a comic book movie. He though he was seeing a movie about the civil rights movement.
Watching your reaction makes me remember how much I love this movie. For a reason I watched like three times in theaters. 😋 Great reaction, always excited to see them!
the role of women in this was very much done on purpose to reflect the esteemed and lofty role historically played by women in both African families and African American families. Shuri is the brain, the women are fighters, Lupita's character is basically Wakandan James Bond; she's a spy. The Dora Milage are the most elite fighters who guard the King. Angela Basset's character is viewed with respect and reverence. And in black American society the women have routinely been single mothers, family heads, a single breadwinner, even more apparent with the effects of mass encarceration leaving many black men imprisoned. Its' a bit sad that we are in a place where having a super smart female character is notable but hey we are so we do note it.Saw it in theaters on opening day. I think i might have taken a day off work.
Thank you for continuing the Marvel Universe! This story seems to reflect the conflict between MLK and Malcolm X: Non violence vs violence. BTW- Bucky was brought to Wakanda by Captain America after Civil War during the end credits.
Chadwick filmed this and Infinity war at the same time. I got to be an 'Extra' in both flms. Both were done in Atlanta and we were doing 14 to 16 hour days.
I saw it in the theater, i got there really early. It was incredibly packed with people. I was really sad about Chadwick's death. He seemed like a good guy 😔 i almost hate having to feed on tears and pain infinity war and endgame.
i famously watched this 22 times in theaters before moviepass and A-List we a thing for me lol. i saw it on all formats, 4DX hurt so much lmao, but omg this is the best movie experience ive had. also i loved how you kept excluding wakanda from earth like we were in another planet but the futurism of wakanda really does make you forget we're on earth still. also yeah bucky was brought to wakanda after CW and thats why shuri said "another broken white boy to fix" cause like 1 week ago she was "fixing" bucky lolol
I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but the first white boy to heal was Bucky. And Wakanda in the comics was a thought experiment, based upon history, imagine a land in Africa where we have the origins of the human species, now imagine that land which wasn't destroyed by colonizers (as she called Everett) Allowed to exist without influence from Europe invaders. The great part about this thought experiment is that Stan Lee/Marvel came up with the idea in the mid 1960s. (There were many histories that looked at the damage that colonization did to the history of Africa, including pretending the country was much more savage than it's reality)
A lot of the reactors that I've watched reacting to this movie recently have forgotten that Bucky went to Wakanda in Civil War. Which is weird because the reactors who was watching the films in real time never forgot even though they had to wait years for the films to come out, while these reactors are watching them within months of each other and are forgetting these details.
Speaking of sneakers, there is a great espionage thriller movie from the early 90s by that name with Robert Redford and a lot of other big names that I think you would enjoy.
Did you forget that at the end of Civil War, Bucky was sent there to be deprogrammed... And he was the guy Shure was talking about when she said 'another white boy'... Wakanda is not on another planet, it just has a disguise in the form of the shield around it. Black Panther does not have to be the King, and the King does not have to be Black Panther...
Shanelle, you missed what Ramonda said/did, when Shuri gave the finger. T'Challa is usually the genius; Shuri has her own path (long story), but... Coogler wanted to give some of the best aspects of T'Challa to other characters. It's not to say T'Challa isn't smart in the MCU, but he should be WAY smarter than this. The "White Wolf" is a completely different character, in the Black Panther comics. Bucky was there, because of what happened at the end of Captain America: Civil War.
When you got a little emotional about Chadwick being gone in real life I was thinking "Wait till she sees the next one (Wakanda Forever)." ⚠SEMI POSSIBLE SPOILER⚠ The opening scene was a great goodbye to him. Felt like it was his funeral. RIP Chadwick. X
You sneeze like me... Nice and quiet. It weirds my dad out whenever he sees me sneeze. He's always like, "WTF was that?" My dad always yells at the top of his lungs when he sneezes.
19:55 what part of Wakanda being build over the vibranium meteor did you not understand? Their entire technology is based on vibranium... and their clothes, there is nothing to doubt about here
Your comment doesn't really make any sense. Shanelle's comment was a valid question. I mean the scene is purposely placed there to lead the audience to think the storyline is going to be Ross telling the UN, Wakanda has more vibranium.
The fight scene with Killmonger is a big reason I cannot watch this movie multiple times. This is a great movie, but it's one of those movies you watch once or twice and that is all you need. The Killmonger fight scene is so gut wrenching that I just don't feel the desire to re-watch this movie. For that reason I cannot justifiably put this on the A+ tier of Marvel movies, even though I know it's a great movie, but to me rewatchability is a major factor in ranking a movie.
25:01 - Because T'Chaka was old, and T'Challa was in line already. 26:50 - Martin Freeman played Bilbo Baggins in the Peter Jackson Hobbit trilogy. He was well known before that for several roles, not the least of which being Watson in the TV series Sherlock (along with future Dr. Strange Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes). 30:25 - Because, as established earlier, he's always believed that Wakanda should make it's true nature known to the outside world and do it's part to make things better. He's tired of serving under kings that just want to hide. Killmonger, for all his desire to make war, DOES want that. 43:40 - Because this is where Cap left him. Sure, when Cap left, he was on ice, but Shuri has been overseeing his therapy. I got the impression throughout the video that you thought Wakanda was another planet. It's not. It just a country in Africa, but their society is hyper-advanced thanks to the vibranium and they keep that a secret to protect themselves. Also, Killmonger is widely regarded as one of the best, if not THE best, villain in the entire MCU.
Killmonger is such a great villain. A lot of the marvel villains are generic but this one having such a great villain with an interesting villain and a great performance by Michael B Jordan is what makes this movie for me.
They're helping Bucky to heal, and he needs it. Plus he's a wanted fugitive, so if he steps outside of Wakanda, he'll be arrested or killed on the spot.

Not to mention that Killmonger killed Klaw, which T'challa failed at doing.
Just realized both Gollum and Bilbo are in this movie lol
Yeah, they're the Tolkien White guys.
Don’t forget Ceaser - King of Apes!
@@DC_Prox youtube can close up shop for the day, you just won.🤣
@@DC_Prox god damn I was hoping no one made that joke yet😂

Killmonger is a top 3 MCU antagonist for me. In the end, he convinced T'challa to change his worldview. He went from isolationism to engagement. Killmonger's ends were justfiable. His means were not.
And Thanos’s were both justifiable IMO
Meh. Hes an asshole, not a villain.
@christopherlane5238 did I call him a "villain"?
Kevin Fiege (FY-GEE) with a hard G. Also, Bucky is there because Captain America brings him there to help get rehabilitated. It was in the Civil War end credit scene.
In Age of Ultron, Ultron ripped Klaue’s arm off.
Father (John Kani) and son (Atandwa Kani) played old and young King T'Chaka
This is a interesting and sad tidbit about the director Ryan Coogler: he was going to a Bank of America branch in Atlanta with a cheque for 10,000 with a note asking for the money to be counted discreetly when he was detained by police after the teller had seen that his account was flagged as "high-risk transaction" and she being pregnant felt worried for her and her child's safety when she told her manager. The police after seeing who he was after clearing everything up let him, his driver, and a passenger go and Bank of America issued an apology and everything was resolved in the end.
😢I wonder why some people comment on black movies, when they dont care about black people....they will always get the main parts of the dialogue wrong, the comedic parts wrong...the main messages wrong....either by accident( huhhhh) or ON PURPOSE.....or the scariest thing....they will run the story straight out.....without giving an absolute fuck about them....people like that will sleep good at night knowing that an innocent black person was killed....and love it
Pronouncing Feige as Feej is my absolute favorite part of this video lol Beautiful.
Wakanda is not a different planet, it's in Africa.
I have an odd feeling that more Americans would identify Wakanda as a country in Africa before they get identify any other country in Africa
@@mercurywoodrose Yes Ive seen the videos, its that and Zamunda
@@mercurywoodrosetheir favorite African American is Elon musk
I don't think she meant Wakanda was alien, but the vibranium arrived in an asteroid from space, so it is alien.
I've seen several reactors make that mistake. There must be something about the editing that's not clear on that point.
T'challa is a Tony Stark level genius in the comics. The MCU downplayed his intelligence to give Shuri a more prominent role.
and yet she still doesn't know what sneakers are.
@@kevinramsey417That was a joke. And they made T'challa the Steve Rogers type of hero in this version.
Not only a genius, one of the top ten smartest people on Earth.
This film is special for so many reasons. One of the best.
Rememberrrrrr the end credits after CIVIL WAR 😊… that’s why Shuri says “ANother broken white boy to fix 😂”
Great reaction, always excited to see them!
the role of women in this was very much done on purpose to reflect the esteemed and lofty role historically played by women in both African families and African American families.
The Lord of the rings connection you’re looking for is the fact that Klaue is the same actor as Gollum
Andy Serkis (Klau) played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies while Marin Freeman played the younger version of Bilbo Baggins
34:45, uhm Steve brought him there at the end of Civil War...so they can remove his programming
I've never been to wakanda but I have been to Uganda LOL
You forgot the end credits of Civil War. When Bucky and Cap. Went to Wakanda, and Bucky went back under until they can get the stuff out of his head.
Yo! Your hair is shining today, brighter than your personality. Good job! It’s quite beautiful.
Can you guess why two characters in this movie are referred to as "the Tolkien white guys"?
I saw it in the theater, i got there really early. It was incredibly packed with people. I was really sad about Chadwick's death. He seemed like a good guy 😔 i almost hate having to feed on tears and pain infinity war and endgame.
9:16 Planets? lol
i famously watched this 22 times in theaters before moviepass and A-List we a thing for me lol. i saw it on all formats, 4DX hurt so much lmao, but omg this is the best movie experience ive had.
also i loved how you kept excluding wakanda from earth like we were in another planet but the futurism of wakanda really does make you forget we're on earth still. also yeah bucky was brought to wakanda after CW and thats why shuri said "another broken white boy to fix" cause like 1 week ago she was "fixing" bucky lolol
I usually save my reactions until after work, but the way RUclips is moving, I'm watching these immediately!
Claws's character was in Avengers - Age of Ultron, where Ultron cut his arm off.. 🤖
"Fake hand - what is that?"
In Age of Ultron Ultron chopped off Klau's arm...
Speaking of sneakers, there is a great espionage thriller movie from the early 90s by that name with Robert Redford and a lot of other big names that I think you would enjoy.
9:18? Other planets??? This is Earth...
When she said artifacts from other planets she was referencing the vibranium being from space.

Shan with the glam
why is no one talking about that "I hate Lord of the Rings" comment?
Please rewatch this movie again and post your thoughts. The amount of things you didn't hear or didn't understand was frustrating.
Kevin Feige's name is pronounced "fy-gee" (with a hard "g" sound).
First comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture.
When you got a little emotional about Chadwick being gone in real life I was thinking "Wait till she sees the next one (Wakanda Forever)."
⚠SEMI POSSIBLE SPOILER⚠
The opening scene was a great goodbye to him. Felt like it was his funeral. RIP Chadwick. X
Been waiting for this!!! Woo hoo!!!
You sneeze like me... Nice and quiet. It weirds my dad out whenever he sees me sneeze. He's always like, "WTF was that?" My dad always yells at the top of his lungs when he sneezes.
RIP, Chadwick Boseman, Wakanda Forever.
You are not ready for Avengers: Infinity War.
Hi Shanelle hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
M’Baku is called Man-Ape in the comics
IMAX 3D. Was amazing!
Your hair is fantastic. It's working for you
"Because you know I hate Lord of the Rings" 😮😮
We know what’s coming everyone… can’t wait .
Just fyi -Kevin Feige (Marvel CEO) is pronounced in 2 syllables with a hard G (Fi-ghee)...kinda sounds like five geese
A lot of the marvel villains are generic but this one having such a great villain with an interesting villain and a great performance by Michael B Jordan is what makes this movie for me.
you started the video out saying you need to pay attention and then proceed to do the same thing this movie 🤣😅😆
They're helping Bucky to heal, and he needs it. Plus he's a wanted fugitive, so if he steps outside of Wakanda, he'll be arrested or killed on the spot.
